Savinelli Saint Nicholas 2015: A Christmas Pipe With Lasting Character
$220.00
There is something especially appealing about a seasonal pipe that survives long enough to outgrow the season it was made for. What begins as a Christmas novelty can, after a decade or more, become a small historical object: a record of a particular year, a particular design decision, and a particular moment in a manufacturer’s catalogue. The Savinelli Saint Nicholas 2015 is a fine example of that transformation.
At first glance, the pipe immediately announces that it belongs to Savinelli’s annual Saint Nicholas series. The dark rusticated briar, polished black acrylic stem and distinctive sequence of coloured and metallic rings create a restrained Christmas identity without turning the pipe into a decorative curiosity. Green and red provide the obvious seasonal reference, while the metallic accents give the junction between shank and stem a more refined appearance.
The result is festive, but not theatrical.
That restraint is important. Many Christmas-themed objects rely so heavily on the seasonal identity that they feel out of place during the rest of the year. The Saint Nicholas 2015 avoids that problem. Remove the Christmas association, and what remains is still a handsome Italian briar pipe with strong proportions, a tactile rusticated finish, and a visually balanced stem treatment.
The briar is finished in a very dark brown-to-near-black rustication. Under subdued light, the pipe can appear almost entirely black. Stronger illumination reveals warmer brown and reddish undertones beneath the surface, particularly around the smoother portions of the shank where the stamping is located. This variation gives the finish more depth than a uniformly black pipe.
Rustication also changes the way the pipe feels in the hand. The surface is deeply textured rather than merely patterned, giving the bowl a rugged character that contrasts effectively with the smooth acrylic stem. This combination works particularly well on a compact bent shape, where the transition from rough briar to polished stem becomes one of the pipe’s dominant visual features.
The example examined here carries simple stamping on the shank:
SAVINELLI
SAINT NICHOLAS
The familiar Savinelli emblem is also present on the stem.
Interestingly, it has no visible numerical shape designation or country-of-origin stamping. This is unusual enough to attract attention, but it does not prevent the pipe from being identified with reasonable confidence. Its physical dimensions closely match Savinelli’s established 626 Bent Apple proportions.
The pipe measures about 135 mm overall, with a bowl height of 42 mm and a maximum outside bowl diameter of 37 mm. The tobacco chamber measures about 19 mm in diameter and 36 mm deep, and the complete pipe weighs around 39 to 40 grams.
Those measurements place it firmly within a comfortable everyday size. It is neither a miniature pipe nor an oversized statement piece. Instead, it occupies the practical middle ground Savinelli is best known for.
The 626 shape is one of Savinelli’s most recognizable bent Apple interpretations. The bowl has enough fullness to add visual substance without feeling heavy, while the bent stem shortens the pipe’s apparent length and gives the overall profile a compact, relaxed character. In the hand, the shape feels substantial but not cumbersome.
The approximately 19 mm chamber is also highly versatile. It is large enough for ribbon-cut Virginias, traditional English mixtures and many aromatic blends, yet not so wide that it becomes difficult to manage with slower-burning tobaccos. The 36 mm chamber depth provides a sensible tobacco capacity for a medium-length smoke.
At roughly 40 grams, the pipe remains comparatively light. That matters particularly with a bent shape, where balance can make the difference between a pipe that feels natural and one that becomes tiring. The Saint Nicholas 2015 achieves a good compromise between visual mass and practical weight.
The black acrylic stem contributes significantly to the pipe’s character. Acrylic has a harder, more polished appearance than traditional vulcanite and works particularly well with the bright decorative rings. Its glossy surface provides the visual counterpoint to the rugged rusticated bowl.
Between bowl and stem sits the feature that makes the Saint Nicholas 2015 immediately recognizable: a narrow arrangement of metallic and coloured bands. The combination of silver-toned separators with green, gold-toned and red elements gives the pipe its Christmas identity.
Savinelli wisely concentrated the decoration in this small area rather than spreading colour across the entire pipe. The effect is similar to a restrained piece of jewellery. It catches the eye, but it does not dominate the design.
This approach reflects one of Savinelli’s long-standing strengths. The company has always been comfortable taking traditional European pipe shapes and giving them a distinctly Italian interpretation. Savinelli pipes are often recognizable not because they reject tradition, but because they modify it through proportion, finishing and colour.
The Saint Nicholas series is particularly interesting in this respect. Each annual edition takes familiar Savinelli shapes and gives them a temporary seasonal identity. The underlying pipe remains practical and recognizable, while the finish and decorative treatment identify the year.
That makes older Saint Nicholas pipes increasingly interesting to collectors.
A standard production pipe can remain visually unchanged for many years. An annual Saint Nicholas edition, by contrast, belongs to a specific period. The colour combination, rustication and stem treatment become a kind of timestamp. Once that production year has passed, the pipe gradually changes from a seasonal retail item into a dated example of Savinelli design history.
The 2015 edition has now reached that stage.
More than a decade after its release, the green and red bands no longer suggest Christmas merchandise. They identify a specific year in Savinelli’s continuing sequence of seasonal pipes. That distinction gives the pipe modest but genuine collecting interest, especially when the original finish, stem emblem, and decorative components remain intact.
The absence of a visible shape number adds another small element of interest. Its dimensions closely match the 626 Bent Apple, but without a surviving numerical stamp, identification is best treated as dimensional and stylistic rather than absolute. For collectors, this is a useful reminder that estate pipes are physical objects that acquire wear, polishing and individual histories over time. Not every marking survives equally well.
That history is part of an estate pipe’s appeal.
A well-maintained briar can remain useful for decades. Unlike many consumer products, a good pipe doesn’t necessarily become obsolete just because it’s been used. Proper cleaning, sanitizing and careful restoration can return an older pipe to regular service while preserving the evidence of its previous life.
The Saint Nicholas 2015 is particularly suited to this second life. Its rusticated finish naturally disguises minor handling marks better than a highly polished smooth briar, while the dark colouring remains visually forgiving. The acrylic stem also resists the oxidation problems commonly associated with vulcanite.
As a smoking instrument, the pipe remains entirely practical. As a collectible, it carries a specific annual identity. As a design object, it shows how small decorative changes can give an established shape a completely different personality.
That combination is what makes the Savinelli Saint Nicholas series more interesting than the phrase “Christmas pipe” might suggest.
The Saint Nicholas 2015 may have been created for a particular holiday season, but its appeal has lasted well beyond it. Beneath the red and green accents is a traditional Italian briar pipe with sensible proportions, excellent balance and a durable finish.
The seasonal decoration gives it character.
The Savinelli name gives it pedigree.
And time has given it something it couldn’t have when it was new: history.
